Washington opened the ITA Northwest Regional Championships with five singles victories at Nordstrom Tennis Center on Friday, October 16. Luis Carvalho, Soham Purohit, Nikola Plavsic, Jan Chlodnicki and Stephane Kamendje advanced in the main draw.

These are individual tournament results, not a dual-match team victory. Keeping that distinction clear is important: the number of advancing players describes UW’s productive opening day without inventing a team score against a field of different schools.

Different routes through the opening round

The school’s Friday results list Carvalho beating Pacific’s Christof Schaertlin Coffey 6–2, 7–5; Plavsic beating California’s Melchior Delloye 6–1, 7–5; and Chlodnicki beating California’s Winston Wooin Lee 6–4, 6–2.

Kamendje advanced against Gonzaga’s Diego Herrera 7–6, 6–2. Purohit needed a recovery, dropping the opener before winning the next two sets 6–3, 6–3 against Portland’s Stefan Skobelev.

In doubles, UC Davis’ Cyrus Ahmad and Nadaul Cheam beat Plavsic and Sebastian Gampert 8–7(2). That result prevents an overly simple description of the day as an uninterrupted Washington success.

What the results establish

Our analysis: advancing several players is useful because it creates more competitive opportunities within the same tournament. It also gives the staff different performances to evaluate, including straight-set wins and a comeback.

The scorelines do not establish which technical change produced those wins. Without match-by-match reporting or player comments, it would be speculative to assign the outcomes to a particular serve pattern, tactical instruction or emotional response.

What to watch next

UW’s published Saturday schedule pairs Carvalho with Oregon’s Rasmus Hembo, Purohit with Portland State’s Aarjun Pandit, Plavsic with Oregon’s Sam Olszakowski, Chlodnicki with Stanford’s Ronit Karki and Kamendje with UC Davis’ Ahmad. The listed singles start is approximately 10:30 a.m. on October 17.

The editorial priority is carrying the opening day’s execution into a fresh opponent rather than treating advancement as proof that the next round will follow the same pattern. In doubles, a narrow defeat also makes the next opportunity worth watching without assuming that one tiebreak describes the pair’s overall level.

The official report contains inconsistent date wording in its narrative; this recap follows its Friday results and Saturday schedule labels. No unsupported injury information or player reaction is added.
