Washington turns a chase into a title
Washington won the Saint Mary’s Invitational on Wednesday at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, California, closing with a 16-under 272 to finish at 838, 26 under par. The Huskies began the final round five strokes behind and finished eight ahead of Santa Clara. Seattle University tied Arkansas State for ninth at 866, two over.
The two Seattle programs left the same 18-team tournament with different tasks for the winter. Washington converted contention into a trophy; the Redhawks finished in the middle of the field after their best team round came on opening day. The final leaderboard gives both a concrete measure of what held up over 54 holes.
The round that changed the tournament
UW’s decisive stretch came after the turn. All five Huskies birdied the par-five 10th, and Brock Maulding followed with an eagle hole-out at 11 and another birdie at 12, according to Washington’s official recap. That sequence helped create separation rather than leaving the result to the final green.
Freshman Hamish Farquharson shared the individual championship at 206, 10 under. His rounds of 66, 72 and 68 matched the totals of Santa Clara’s Emil Nielsen, Oregon’s Adam Anderson and California’s Sihao Cong. Maulding closed with 66, Finn Koelle with 67, Emil Herstad with 71 and Grady Millar with 71.
The official scoring sheet places Koelle tied sixth at 208, Maulding tied 12th at 211, Herstad tied 17th at 213 and Millar tied 30th at 217. Those contributions spread the work across the lineup: the winning team total did not depend on the individual co-champion alone.
Seattle U’s finish
Elliot Ro led the Redhawks with a share of 17th at 213 after rounds of 70, 70 and 73. Kevin Li tied 25th at 215. Jacob Kang and Cade McVicker each finished at 219, tied 42nd, while Burly Hildreth posted 233. The final tournament sheet confirms Seattle U’s tie for ninth; its school schedule lists ninth of 18.
Seattle U’s team rounds were 282, 291 and 293. Analysis: the opening 18 showed a scoring level the Redhawks could not sustain. The useful offseason question is how to keep more counting scores around par through consecutive rounds, rather than relying on one strong start to carry the week.
Expectations and needed improvements
Washington’s Tuesday report had the team fourth at 10 under after an even-par second round, behind Oregon, California and Santa Clara. Wednesday therefore answered an immediate competitive question: could the Huskies respond after losing ground? Their closing score supplied a clear answer.
Analysis: UW’s next benchmark is consistency across an entire tournament. A spectacular final round can repair a stalled second day, but reducing that variation would make the team less dependent on a comeback. Seattle U faces a related challenge from a different position: maintain its early scoring pace long enough to contend higher on the board.
The documented conversation and what comes next
Washington’s athletics report identifies this as the program’s first team tournament title since the 2023 Husky Invitational. Its pre-tournament assessment had emphasized three straight top-three finishes and a No. 33 Clippd ranking. This victory gives that encouraging start a stronger finish without establishing what the spring will bring.
UW next lists the Southwestern Invitational on January 25–26, 2027, at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village. Seattle U’s schedule next lists the Burns Intercollegiate on February 11–13. Analysis: the break gives both programs time to turn the round-by-round evidence into practice priorities, with repeatable counting scores the clearest shared target.
