Bugg sends Reign into playoffs as Fishlock’s final regular season ends with a win
Seattle’s 1–0 Decision Day victory secures the eighth seed and a quarterfinal trip to Gotham FC.

Seattle Reign FC earned another week together. Jordyn Bugg’s 68th-minute finish gave Seattle a 1–0 victory over the Orlando Pride at Lumen Field on Sunday, November 1, securing the eighth and final NWSL playoff berth. An afternoon marking Jess Fishlock’s final regular-season appearance became a passage into the postseason, rather than the end of her playing career.
A corner turns pressure into the winning goal
The decisive chance came after Seattle forced another corner. Nerilia Mondesir delivered toward the near post, Fishlock redirected the ball and a touch off Mia Fishel left Bugg positioned to finish. The center back converted the loose ball, supplying the breakthrough that Seattle’s earlier opportunities had failed to produce.
Orlando had resisted through important interventions. Oihane cleared a Mondesir effort off the line in the first half, and goalkeeper Cosette Morché kept Fishlock out before the break. The Pride’s official report independently confirmed both the scoreless interval and the second-half corner that settled the match.
Seattle then protected its advantage through the closing stages and four minutes of added time. Fishlock left for Sally Menti in the 82nd minute, with the club’s match report documenting the applause from a crowd of 16,095. The occasion mattered, but the result depended on completing the defensive work after the goal.
What the result changes
The Reign’s official announcement confirms a ninth postseason appearance in club history and a second consecutive berth. Their next opponent is top-seeded Gotham FC, the NWSL Shield winner. Seattle travels to Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, for the quarterfinal on Sunday, November 8, at 9:30 a.m. Pacific, with coverage on ABC and ESPN Deportes.
Curtis Crabtree’s November 1 FOX 13 Seattle report also placed Bugg’s goal within the immediate playoff stakes and Fishlock’s final regular-season match. That combination gives Sunday its significance: Seattle won the game it needed while preserving another competitive opportunity for a retiring club original.
The documented view inside the team
In the Reign’s November 1 feature, coach Laura Harvey described the players’ respect for Fishlock and said the group wanted the result both for itself and for her. Fishlock, discussing her younger teammates, said, “they give me so much life and they give me so much joy.” Those are the participants’ documented perspectives, rather than a claim about every supporter’s response.
Harvey also identified Bugg and other young players as potential future leaders. A defender providing the deciding finish is a useful expression of shared responsibility: Seattle did not need its most celebrated veteran to score in order to extend the season.
Analysis: take the pressure, improve the finish
Seattle should carry forward the willingness to challenge the opponent’s buildup and keep attacking after a missed chance. The improvement is turning that territorial pressure into an earlier lead. When a match remains level deep into the second half, one deflection or transition can undo a long stretch of promising play.
Against Gotham, pressure must be supported by compact spacing behind it. The first player closing the ball needs teammates positioned to contest the next pass. Otherwise, an aggressive start can expose the very space the team is trying to deny. Set pieces offer another route, but they work best alongside repeatable chances from open play.
Sunday established that Seattle could manage a narrow lead when qualification depended on it. The quarterfinal will demand the same concentration against the league’s top seed, with less room for an unproductive spell. These are editorial priorities for the next match, not a prediction that the regular-season result will repeat.
